USAID Global Initiatives
USAID/Senegal participates in a number of Global and Presidential Initiatives coordinated through USAID in Washington, DC and implemented worldwide. Below is a list of these programs in which we are participating.
The Africa Education Initiative
The Africa Education Initiative (AEI), a Presidential Initiative, focuses on increasing access to quality education in over 30 sub-Saharan countries, seeks to extend development partnerships between the U.S. and Africa by engaging African leaders and educators, the international development community, and U.S. organizations. AEI partnerships also include several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs.).
USAID Senegal's Education program takes advantage of the Textbooks and Learning Materials program, which has awarded nearly 4,800 scholarships to Senegalese girls and nearly 900 scholarships to boys in the
Global Food Security Response
While food prices have declined from the crisis levels of early 2008, prices continue to be significantly higher in many developing countries. This food crisis and the growing implications of the financial crisis have added to the ranks of nearly a billion people living with chronic poverty and hunger.
The U.S. continues to be the world’s largest food aid donor providing, on average, over half of annual international food aid. In response to the food crisis, the U.S. Government committed over $5.5 billion for fiscal years 2008 and 2009 to fight world hunger. $4.75 billion of these funds were programmed by USAID. In Senegal, the USAID/Economic Growth office has a budget of $60 million and the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance/West Africa Regional Office has a budget of $30 million, which was spent on implementing programs that address this critical issue.
President's Malaria Initiative
The President's Malaria Initiative (PMI), is a $1.2 billion, five-year initiative to control malaria in Africa announced by former President Bush in June 2005. PMI is a collaborative U.S. Government effort led by USAID, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Human Services (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the Department of State, the White House, and others. USAID/Senegal's three-year malaria program (2007-2010) is currently $48 million. The goal of PMI is to reduce malaria deaths by half in 15 target countries in Africa by reaching 85 percent of the most vulnerable groups — children under 5 years of age and pregnant women — with proven and effective malaria prevention and treatment control measures: insecticide-treated mosquito nets, indoor residual spraying, lifesaving antimalarial drugs, and treatment to prevent malaria in pregnant women.
Global Health Initiative
The Global Health Initiative (GHI) is a 6-year, $63 billion, interagency effort to support partner countries in improving and expanding access to health services. The GHI seeks to improve specific health outcomes through activities that are guided by the following principles: i) adopt a women and girl-cetnered approach to health and gender equity; ii) increase impact through strategic integration and coordination; iii) strengthen and leverage multilateral institutions; iv) encourage country ownership and invest in country-led plans; v) build sustainability through health systems strengthening; vi) improve metrics, monitoring and evulation; and vii) promote research, development and innovation.
