Youssou N'dour, Africa's Best-selling Musician and Malaria Advocate Participates in Global Pulse 2010
In addition to being Africa’s best-selling pop musician, Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour is one of the continent’s most effective combatants in the fight against malaria. On Wednesday, March 31, 2010, Mr. N'Dour joined a host of VIPs and experts for Global Pulse 2010, USAID's 72-hour online discussion forum. The forum was an opportunity to engage people from around the world on their opinions regarding a variety of topics in international development. USAID/Senegal was one of nine "focal" countries, chosen among other reasons for its regional presence and moderate muslim population. Responses for participants in the focal countries will be recorded and used for strategic programming purposes by the Missions involved.
This global dialogue attracted 6,500 - plus participants from over 155 countries who posted more than 9,000 ideas, reactions, opinions, and perspectives. Participants were:
- 60 percent from outside the U.S.
- 51 percent female
- 50 percent under 35 years old
Mr. N'Dour's participation helped to call attention to one of the most prevalent health issues facing Senegal. Mr. N'Dour serves as a UNICEF and Roll Back Malaria ambassador and a board member for Malaria No More. Time Magazine named Youssou one of the “World’s 100 Most Influential People” in 2007.
